RECOGNIZE THE PROBLEM

What does “stuck” look like?

The way the door stops gives useful clues. Even a small detail can help us narrow down the problem.

01

Stuck completely closed

The opener hums or clicks, but the door does not lift.

02

Stuck open or halfway

The door stops before closing, leaving your garage exposed.

03

Moves, then reverses

The door starts to close but changes direction before reaching the floor.

04

Crooked or off-track

One side sits lower, or a roller appears to have left the track.

BEFORE WE ARRIVE

Pause before trying again.

Repeatedly running the opener or pushing a jammed door can turn a manageable problem into a dangerous one.

What you can do safely

  • Keep people clear of the door's path, especially if it is hanging unevenly.
  • From a safe distance, note any obvious obstruction in the doorway.
  • Tell us whether the door is stuck open, closed, or partway, and whether it looks crooked.

Do not force the door, reach into tracks, or attempt to reset rollers or cables. Never pull the emergency release on an open or partially open door.

WHAT WE DO

What we fix when a door is stuck

A door that won't move is a symptom, not a diagnosis. These are the repairs we most often make to get a stuck or off-track door working safely again.

Off-track doors

Guiding rollers back into the track, straightening or replacing bent track sections, and securing loose track brackets.

Rollers and hinges

Replacing worn, cracked, or seized rollers and broken hinges that make the door bind or tilt.

Cables and springs

Repairing snapped or tangled lift cables and broken springs, one of the most common reasons a door won't lift.

Sensors and opener settings

Realigning safety sensors and adjusting the opener's travel and force settings when the door reverses or stops short.

HOW REPAIR WORKS

Find the blockage. Fix the cause.

A stuck door can have several causes, from a sensor issue to a failed spring, cable, or roller. The right fix depends on what we find.

  1. STEP 01

Inspect the door position, tracks, rollers, cables, springs, and opener.

  2. STEP 02

Explain the cause, repair options, and price before work begins.

  3. STEP 03

Complete the approved repair and test the door through a full cycle.

GOOD TO KNOW

Questions we hear often.

Why does my garage door start closing, then go back up?

It may be reacting to an obstruction or a safety sensor issue, but other mechanical problems are possible. Clear only obvious items from the doorway without reaching near moving parts.

Can I force a stuck door shut to secure my garage?

No. Forcing it can damage the tracks or make an unstable door fall. Keep clear and call for help, especially if it is crooked or stuck open.

Is a stuck door always an opener problem?

Not necessarily. The opener may be working while a spring, roller, cable, or track prevents the door from moving. An inspection helps identify the actual cause.

What does it mean when a garage door is off track?

One or more rollers have come out of the metal track that guides the door. The door may hang crooked or jam partway. An off-track door can be unstable, so keep clear and don't try to push it back yourself.

Can a broken spring make my garage door feel stuck?

Yes. When a spring breaks, the door becomes very heavy and the opener often can't lift it, so the door seems stuck closed. If you heard a loud bang before the problem started, mention it when you call.
